Today, in Jeddah, the Saudi Red Crescent Authority conducted a workshop titled "Preventive Measures to Protect Humanitarian Aid and Health Services During Armed Conflicts." The workshop was held in collaboration with the Permanent Committee for International Humanitarian Law and the Regional Delegation of the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) for the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) States, with participation from various national Red Crescent and Red Cross societies in Arab countries.
In his opening speech, Prince Faisal bin Abdullah Al Saud, Director General of International Cooperation, reaffirmed the Saudi Red Crescent Authority's and the Permanent Committee's commitment to working together with their strategic partner, the ICRC, to promote the culture of international humanitarian law and to protect humanitarian workers and healthcare providers during armed conflicts.
The workshop covered several key topics, including the rights and duties of healthcare and humanitarian workers during armed conflicts, preventive measures to protect humanitarian efforts in military operations (rules of engagement and targeting), the international experiences of Red Crescent and Red Cross societies in delivering humanitarian aid in conflict zones, the protection of humanitarian organization emblems during armed conflicts, criminal responsibility and accountability mechanisms for violations against healthcare, media, and humanitarian personnel during conflicts, best practices for safeguarding health services in military operations, and the strategy and implementation plan for restoring family links during armed conflicts. Additionally, the workshop included practical exercises on family link restoration, the national experience in civil-military coordination to protect humanitarian workers, health teams, and aid during armed conflicts, and the role of national strategic leadership in providing legal protection for humanitarian efforts in conflict zones.
